Visa guidelines

In order to apply for a visa to study in the UK, an application under 'Tier 4–Students' category (applicable from March 31, 2009) of the new Points-based system has to be made. Total 40 points have to be obtained to get the student's visa

It is essential to possess the visa letter from the university, which they provide upon payment of the course fees.

Scheme to provide full interest subsidy during the period of moratorium on loans taken by students belonging to economically weaker sections

Scheme to provide full interest subsidy during the period of moratorium on loans taken by students belonging to economically weaker sections from scheduled banks under the Educational Loan Scheme of the Indian Banks’ Association, for pursuing any of the approved courses of studies in technical and professional streams, from recognized institutions in India – in short “Scheme of Interest Subsidy on Educational Loans from scheduled banks for professional education of students from economically weaker sections”

The broad parameters of the Scheme are:

(i) The scheme would be applicable for studies in technical and professional courses in India. The interest subsidy shall be linked with the existing Educational Loan Scheme of IBA and restricted to students enrolled in recognized professional courses (after Class XII) in India in Educational Institutions established by Acts of Parliament, other Institutions recognized by the concerned Statutory Bodies, Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and other institutions set up by the Central Government.

(ii) Under the Scheme, interest payable by the student availing of the Educational Loan Scheme of the Indian Banks’ Association for the period of moratorium (i.e. course period, plus one year or six months after getting job, whichever is earlier) as prescribed under the Educational Loan Scheme of the Indian Banks’ Association, shall be borne by the Government. After the period of moratorium is over, the interest on the outstanding loan amount shall be paid by the student, in accordance with the provisions of the existing Educational Loan Scheme and as may be amended from time to time.

(iii) The benefits under the Scheme would be applicable to those students belonging to economically weaker sections, with an annual income upper limit of Rs. 4.5 lakh per year.

(iv) The interest subsidy under the Scheme shall be available to the eligible students only once, either for the first undergraduate degree course or the post graduate degrees/diplomas. Interest subsidy shall, however, be admissible for combined undergraduate and post graduate courses.

(v) Interest subsidy under this scheme shall not be available for those students who either discontinue the course midstream, due to any reason except on medical grounds, or for those who are expelled from the Institutions on disciplinary or academic grounds.

(vi) The National Minorities Development & Finance Corporation (NMDFC) has an Educational Loan Scheme for individual beneficiaries, which is implemented through State Channelizing Agencies (SCAs). The national Safai Karamcharis Finance and Development Corporation under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment also provides educational loan to the students of the target group for higher education. Interest on Educational Loan provided under these two schemes shall also be subsidized for the period of moratorium.

(vii) Modalities for implementation and monitoring mechanism shall be finalized in consultation with the Canara Bank. There would be a tag/marker on the degree course or student indicating his repayment liabilities.

(viii) The scheme shall be applicable from the academic year 2009-2010.

The Scheme is expected to ease the financial burden on the target group of students to pursue technical and professional studies (after Class XII) in recognized institutions in India and thereby increase their access in these streams of education. This Scheme will benefit about 5 lakh students in getting technical and professional education.

National Overseas Scholarships FOR ST Students

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs implements a Central Sector Scheme of National Overseas Scholarship for ST candidates. As per the provisions of the scheme, scholarship is provided to 15 ST students including 2 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PTG) students per annum. The eligibility criteria under the scheme are as under:-

(i) The income from all sources of the employed candidates or his/her parents’/guardians’ should not exceed Rs. 25,000/- per month.

(ii) Age should be below 35 years.

(iii) The minimum qualification should be 1st class with 60% or equivalent grade in relevant Bachelors/Masters/Ph.D degree for pursuing study for the Master’s/Ph. D/Post Doctoral degrees respectively.

(iv) Scholarship is provided for higher studies in abroad for a total of 35 specific subjects/disciplines only.

(v) The scholarship is restricted to one child in a family and is a one-time award.

There is, however, no provision under the scheme for allocation of awards state-wise. During the last three years and the current year (2008-09 to 2011-12), a total of 8 ST students had gone abroad for higher studies. Under the scheme, a time limit of three years from the date of final selection is given to students for obtaining admission in foreign accredited universities.

Banks are providing educational loans to students pursuing higher studies in India and abroad. The following are the salient features of the educational loan scheme:

(i) Student Eligibility:
Should be an Indian National
Secured admission to Profession/Technial Courses in India or abroad through Entrance Test/Merit Based Selection process.

(ii) Courses Eligible:

Study Abroad: Graduation: For job oriented Professional/Technical Courses offered by reputed Universities. Post Graduation: MCA, MBA, MS etc.

Courses conducted by CIMA-London, CPA in USA etc.

(iii) Quantum of Finance: Need based finance subject to repaying capacity of the parents/students with margin and the following ceilings.
Maximum Loan: Rs. 15 Lakh

Margin: 15%

(iv) Security:
Upto Rs.4 Lakh: No Security

Above Rs.4 lakh and

Upto Rs.7.5 lakh: Collateral in the form of a suitable third party guarantee. The bank may, at its discretion, waive third party guarantee if satisfied with the net-worth/means of parent who would be executing the documents as joint borrower.

Above Rs.7.5 lakh: Collateral of suitable value or suitable third party guarantee alongwith the assignment of future income of the student for payment of installments.

(v) Interest rate: Upto Rs.4 lakh: BPLR

Above Rs.4 lakh: BPLR + 1%

(iv) Capability Certificate

Banks can also issue the capability certificate for students going aborad for higher studies. For this financial and other supporting documents may be obtained from applicant, if required.

No instances of widespread complaints that certain nationalized banks are still reluctant to sanction education loans for professional courses have come to the notice of the government. However, on receipt of any specific complaint against a particular bank necessary action is initiated to redress the complaint.

Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowships For Indian Students

Portugal Scholarships For Indian Students

A. One(1) Scholarship of a months' duration for postgraduate studies/research in the field of education.

B. Two Research scholarships for research work in the subject of Portuguese language and culture for a period not exceeding twelve months each.

Qualification:

Scholarships are meant for post graduate, University teachers who know Portuguese language and with to undertake research in Portuguese language and culture. Applicants should possess Masters degree in the concerned subject. Only the candidates who have secured admissions/acceptance in a Portuguese Institute/university may apply. The applicants should not be more than 45 years of age.

Scholarship Amount:

The Government of Portugal will pay an amount of € 500 (equivalent to INR 21,000) per month.

M.Sc. in International Fisheries Management

Admission requirement : Candidates should have Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts or Cand.mag. degree or equivalent with atleast 60% marks in aggregate with in Biology/Ecology and/or Economics/Organisation/Law. They must have knowledge Mathematics and Statistics corresponding to the University's introductory courses in these subjects.

Value/Passage Cost *

Centre for International University Co-operation (SIU) will pay a return air ticket from the fellows home country.

A monthly allowance sufficient to cover food, rent and other ordinary living expenses will be paid by the middle of each month.

An installation allowance equivalent to half a monthly fellowship allowance will be provided for deposit at the Student Campus, for warm clothing and extraordinary expenses. Supplementary clothing must be covered from the regular monthly fellowship allowance.

While in Norway Fellows attending the international courses are insured against major costs of medical attention through the Norwegian National Health Insurance Scheme (Dental care is not included). SIU covers accident and life insurance for all courses participants.

During the fellow's stay in Norway, SIU does not cover insurance against theft etc. when travelling outside Norway the fellow is not covered by SIU financed insurance.

SIU does not take responsibility for accidents or for the loss of the fellow's luggage or personal possessions on the journey to and from Norway. The fellow is, therefore advised to take out insurance before leaving his/her home country.

New Zealand Scholarships For Indian Students

The University Honors College provides funding for Honors Scholars who plan to study abroad through the Jeremy M. Jacobs and the John D. Gallatin International Honors Scholarships. The maximum award amounts are $500 for summer, $1500 for one semester, $2500 for a full academic year.

Eligibility requirements:

Applicants must be currently enrolled, full-time, matriculated University at Buffalo students in good standing in the Honors College .
Applicants must have already applied for a study abroad or exchange program.
Applicants must propose to study abroad for at least one semester during the academic year (consideration will be given to summer study abroad programs).
Applicants must participate in an overseas academic program for full-time credit (6 credit hours during summer will be considered full-time).
John D. Gallatin or Jeremy M. Jacobs International Honors Scholarship recipients may receive this award only once.

Criteria:

Students who go on University at Buffalo or SUNY-sponsored programs will be given preference, but those planning to enroll in programs sponsored by other universities may also apply.
Applications from students who have never studied or traveled abroad are particularly welcome. Students are encouraged to study abroad in a country or region in which they have not already lived or studied extensively.
An outline of how the study abroad program selected and location aids the student's academic and personal development will be an important factor in the review process.
Students who intend to return to UB for at least one semester following the experience will be given preference.

Meeting The Locals

Most students embark on their study abroad journey with high expectations of making friends with host country locals. But many students return from the experience expressing disappointment with the low level of interaction and/or long-term "connection" they developed with their peers abroad. The good news is that there are certain initiatives you can take in order to better integrate.

There will be a natural tendency for many students to remain surrounded by their peers throughout their time abroad. Of course, some contact with fellow countrymen, such as excursions, orientations, and roommate arrangements, will be unavoidable and healthy as you adjust to your surroundings together. Pushing yourself to move beyond this comfort zone in your free time should be your goal.

Extra-curricular involvements are a great way to meet locals at a friendly level. As a foreigner, you may have language or other natural barriers that make it hard to make meaningful connections in day-to-day casual settings like the classroom. However, the casual environment of dance lessons, sports teams, places of worship, or interest clubs facilitate connections. These settings may put you in touch with a variety of age groups beyond your student peers.

Social outings are another great way to meet locals. Visiting at discos, bars, or restaurants puts you in close contact with locals your age in a relaxed setting. Keep in mind that going out on the town with a large group may decrease your chances of meeting host country peers.

Your homestay may also be a source of introductions to extended family or community members. Take advantage of whatever level of contact is offered by your homestay.

Finally, have reasonable expectations. Acknowledge factors affecting how locals will relate to you, such as the short length of your stay in the host country, the subtle norms of social interaction unique to each culture, and the fact that your background and accent make you different in some way. Think of how your peers tend to relate to international students on your home campus. While some are interested in finding out more about their country of origin and reaching out, others are indifferent. Keep a good attitude. . .don't be surprised or get down on the culture when not everyone is warm and doesn't become an instant friend. Relationships take time and are not automatic, but building friendships with locals is very possible.

Forming relationships with host country nationals is part of the goal and reward of study abroad. With the above suggestions to help you, you will be able to interact with locals in your host country. Hopefully, you will cultivate relationships and keep in touch with some of your friends abroad for years to come.

Quality in Higher Education

Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) is a household acronym with academic bureaucrats who set goals and try to define cost-effective approaches for our colleges and universities. Traditional approaches to quality control are being swept aside, extended, or reinvigorated as U.S. higher education is pushed towards ever higher levels of accomplishment and assessment. Unfortunately, this trend does not include international education and student and faculty exchanges. The now somewhat discredited practice of regional accreditation of higher education institutions has mostly overlooked education abroad. Evaluation depends on the willingness of the U.S. institution to organize and to pay for an on-site visit to the program or institution abroad. Few U.S. institutions have felt the need to do this.

If education abroad really is important to American colleges and universities, as more and more admissions officers claim in their undergraduate recruitment literature, the assessment of quality must also be important. Study abroad will not achieve the major recognition it should have if: 1) the colleges and universities that offer it do not see it as an integral part of their ongoing educational programs, and 2) international education is not evaluated as part of regular academic offerings instead of as an exceptional opportunity.

Efforts to evaluate the quality of education abroad have tended to focus on the smooth functioning of a program and the student's satisfaction with and academic performance in it. The main concerns of the American colleges and universities that offer study abroad programs are the health and safety of students in the program, program funding (is it sufficient to cover basic costs plus those extra facilities and services needed to assure quality?), and the effectiveness of student selection and advising.

The common practice of study abroad programs to ask students to fill out questionnaires on their experience abroad tends to focus on students' reactions to the program and their stay in the foreign country. Students are asked questions such as how satisfied they were with the academic program, the extent and quality of their interaction with the host culture, and, if a foreign language country was involved, how they would rate their proficiency in the language at the beginning and end of the program.

Responses to these kinds of questions are useful to program administrators who wish to improve a program, to strengthen student advising, and, assuming student responses are positive, to use in recruitment activities and literature. The information can also be very helpful to prospective student participants as they try to choose among education abroad options.

What is surprising is that-given tighter budgets and growing pressures for accountability and "value for money"-more U.S. colleges and universities are not demanding that programs abroad be evaluated on the basis of how they compare with home-campus academic programs. While study abroad is still not generally regarded as an integral part of the curriculum, there are some important exceptions, such as some of the Univ. of California's education abroad programs.

Concern with quality in education abroad will make a quantum leap when courses taken in study abroad programs are regarded as important as those taken on the home campus courses in fulfilling degree requirements. When that time comes, the evaluation of the quality of study abroad will take on a whole new-highly important and long overdue-dimension, and the contribution of study abroad to the quality of higher education will be better understood.

Why do an MBA?
As Mike Jones, Director General of the Association of MBAs says “The MBA is focussed on themes and techniques applicable to the business world and demands that students bring to it some business theory and experience. What distinguishes it from other business-led masters degrees is that it is both a postgraduate and post-experience qualification,” so apart from a minimum of two years work experience, what qualifications do you need to be accepted by a UK business school?

How to start
The Association’s Salary and Careers survey reveals that around 80 percent of MBA students studying part-time or full-time held a first degree and had achieved a first or upper second. So a good first degree can be said to be the norm.

Applicants are also usually required to take an entrance exam, and one criterion of how choosy the different schools are is the GMAT score they require applicants to achieve. GMAT comprises tests in numeracy, literacy, verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Non-English-speaking applicants are also required to take an English language test.

Most, but not all, business schools academic years run from September or October. Although the deadline for applications is generally April/May it is advisable to get your application n at the beginning of the calendar year in which you wish to begin studying. Part-time and distance learning MBAs tend to begin in January so you should think about applying for these about six months prior to that.

Many prospective MBAs see the qualification as a passport to change jobs or move between companies, business functions and industries. MBAs can also look forward to a big leap in salary once they have graduated. In fact, our latest Salary survey shows that average starting salaries for graduates have risen by 72 per cent. However, an MBA is a huge investment in both time and money and there are many factors to consider before taking the plunge.

Types of course
The first step is to decide which type of the multitude of courses available is most suitable for you. The MBA programmes can be full-time, part-time, and modular or use distant learning. Full-time programmes usually last a year, while part-time programmes, which offer students the chance to integrate studies with employment, average two or three years.

More than 10,000 students opt for distance learning, which is the fastest growing method of MBA study. Distance learning provides a viable alternative for students who are unable to fit in part-time attendance, or who do not have access to a school of suitable standing. The course takes an average of three to five years to complete.

Additionally, a prospective student needs to consider a range of factors including the size and culture of the school, programme content, quality of faculty and student body, facilities and location. The official MBA handbook is the Association of MBA’s Guide of Business Schools, published by Financial Times/Pitman Publishing at a cost of £29.95. It offers the budding student information on choosing a school, the salary and career prospects open to them once they have obtained their qualification, as well as comprehensive details of programmes and schools. Other topics covered include studying overseas, different methods of study, how to apply, financing an MBA and the impact turning to study may have on families and your social life. The guide also includes a StudyLink MBA CD Rom which highlights programmes accredited by the Association and lists of hundred of others around the globe.

The Programme
Whatever type of MBA you opt for, the core programme will consist of basic business skills (about one-third of the course) and electives (which you choose) As a general rule, core courses should cover managerial economics, financial and management accounting, marketing, quantitative methods, human resource management, operations management, information systems and business strategy. Increasingly schools are offering specialist MBAs but these core subjects still form the meat of the programme.

Selecting a school
Competition among business schools to attract prospective students is fierce and choosing a provider is not an easy task as there are now over 114 schools in the UK.

The reputaion of the institution from which the MBA is gained is crucial. Employers do not simply ask whether an applicant has an MBA, they also want to know where it came from.

Although Europe is beginning to establish league tables of business schools, the process of accreditation that has been carried out by the Association of MBAs for more than 25 years offers clearer, more specific guidance and gives an indication of the quality of a schools programmes that is rather better than that given by the school itself. Programmes at 32 British business Schools and 18 schools on the continent and elsewhere carry accreditation by the Association on full-time, part-time, modular and distance learning programmes.

Accreditation by the Association gives an indication of the standing of the business school involved and also means that students are eligible for the Association’s loan scheme, which is designed to help individuals paying their own fees. Since the loan programme started in the 1970’s £130 million has been made available to students.

The rewards
Company sponsorship is the most popular method of taking an MBA. Our Salary Survey shows that 50 per cent of MBA students have all fees paid by their employers, and only 16 per cent report no financial assistance.

The decision to take an MBA cannot be taken lightly – but, as our survey demonstrates, for those who graduate the prospects, both in terms of personal development and career progression, are bright.
